Background of the study
Multilingualism is a defining feature of Nigerian society, permeating all aspects of public life, including political discourse. In the context of Nigerian politics, multiple languages are employed to engage diverse constituencies and articulate policy positions (Chinwe, 2023). Political actors often switch between indigenous languages, Pidgin English, and standard English to appeal to a broad audience, reflect cultural identity, and negotiate power dynamics. This linguistic diversity enriches political debate but also complicates communication, as messages may be interpreted differently by various linguistic groups (Eke, 2024). The strategic use of language in political discourse plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, mobilizing voters, and framing political narratives. As Nigeria continues to navigate complex ethnic and linguistic divisions, understanding the interplay between language and politics is essential. This study investigates how multilingualism influences political discourse, examining the impact of language choices on political effectiveness, voter engagement, and policy formulation in Nigeria (Ifeoma, 2023).

Statement of the problem
The use of multiple languages in Nigerian political discourse poses significant challenges for clarity and inclusiveness. While multilingualism offers a platform for diverse voices, it also creates ambiguities that can lead to misinterpretation and polarization among voters (Umeh, 2024). The lack of uniformity in language usage often results in communication gaps, undermining the effectiveness of political messaging and policy dissemination. Moreover, political actors may exploit linguistic differences to advance partisan agendas, further fragmenting the electorate. This study seeks to understand the implications of multilingual political discourse on voter engagement and policy formulation, addressing the need for strategies that can harmonize diverse linguistic practices while ensuring clear communication (Nnadi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To analyze the role of multilingualism in shaping Nigerian political discourse.
  2. To assess the impact of language diversity on political communication and voter engagement.
  3. To propose recommendations for improving clarity and inclusiveness in political messaging.

Research questions:

  1. How does multilingualism influence the effectiveness of political discourse in Nigeria?
  2. What are the challenges associated with multiple language use in political communication?
  3. How can political messaging be optimized to accommodate Nigeria’s linguistic diversity?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Multilingual political discourse has a significant impact on voter engagement in Nigeria.
  2. The diversity of language use in politics contributes to communication ambiguities.
  3. Implementing standardized communication strategies can improve the clarity of political discourse.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores the critical role of multilingualism in Nigerian political discourse, offering insights into how language practices affect political communication and voter behavior. The findings are expected to guide political actors and policymakers in developing more effective and inclusive communication strategies. By addressing the challenges of multilingual messaging, the study contributes to a more unified and participatory political environment (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating multilingualism in Nigerian political discourse. It focuses exclusively on political communication and does not cover other areas of public discourse.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Multilingualism: The use or presence of multiple languages within a given context.
  2. Political Discourse: Communication that occurs within the political sphere, including speeches, debates, and media communications.
  3. Voter Engagement: The level of participation and involvement of citizens in the political process.
