Background of the study
Multilingualism is a defining feature of Nigerian society, permeating all aspects of public life, including political discourse. In the context of Nigerian politics, multiple languages are employed to engage diverse constituencies and articulate policy positions (Chinwe, 2023). Political actors often switch between indigenous languages, Pidgin English, and standard English to appeal to a broad audience, reflect cultural identity, and negotiate power dynamics. This linguistic diversity enriches political debate but also complicates communication, as messages may be interpreted differently by various linguistic groups (Eke, 2024). The strategic use of language in political discourse plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, mobilizing voters, and framing political narratives. As Nigeria continues to navigate complex ethnic and linguistic divisions, understanding the interplay between language and politics is essential. This study investigates how multilingualism influences political discourse, examining the impact of language choices on political effectiveness, voter engagement, and policy formulation in Nigeria (Ifeoma, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The use of multiple languages in Nigerian political discourse poses significant challenges for clarity and inclusiveness. While multilingualism offers a platform for diverse voices, it also creates ambiguities that can lead to misinterpretation and polarization among voters (Umeh, 2024). The lack of uniformity in language usage often results in communication gaps, undermining the effectiveness of political messaging and policy dissemination. Moreover, political actors may exploit linguistic differences to advance partisan agendas, further fragmenting the electorate. This study seeks to understand the implications of multilingual political discourse on voter engagement and policy formulation, addressing the need for strategies that can harmonize diverse linguistic practices while ensuring clear communication (Nnadi, 2023).
